Maybe you should ask the autoconf people? I did not know that auto* is 
usable on The Dark Side at all. What do they create there? makefiles for 
MS make or project files for Visual Studio?

I can find someting similar in /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/c.m4 (autoconf 
2.59).
