I think that LyX can do everything necessary, so long as it knows 'what is reasonable' for each 'output format'. At the moment, this information is hard coded within LyX. We could move it outside of LyX if we use something similar to your description of some of the attributes to be found in Norman Walsh's style sheets. Doing so will enable the compiler (latex, pdflatex, htlatex, sgml-tools, ...) that transforms LyX's 'output format' further to proceed happily on its way. -- Angus
