Dear lyx-devel, I just tried the 1.4.0cvs version, and as a user of LyX since 6 years, I want to point out some problems I had with it.
The pop-up warning dialog that comes at time of LaTeX generation is really counter-productive. Here is my story: I have a document which is composed of around 10 files. The top-level document has a different class than others, because the pieces are actually included from other top-level files with different classes. Anyway, I got 10 popup dialogs saying "this document has a different class than the parent class" every time I want to see or update the DVI output. Furthermore, there is no meaning for these dialogs, because it doesn't even allow me to cancel the process. It's just an annoying popup. I believe having a popup which only interrupts an automatic process and waits for mouse click/keyboard is not very useful. I would suggest either: 1) Having a concept of LyX log file/window similar to the LaTeX log concept. 2) Having little LyX-Warning boxes embedded in the document, similar to the TeXError boxes that appear after compilation. 3) If you *really* want to keep the popups, then there should be a button "ignore all" or a checkbox. Or there should be a way to stop these from the preferences. I really don't want to just complain. I saw a lot of nice changes, too. The visual interface have improved a lot. I like the re-organization of the menus, etc. For reference, I am using a RH 8.0 system with the Qt front-end. The point I make is also relevant to better handle the preprocessing done by LyX. I pointed this out earlier (http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=lyx-devel&m=107265398302691&w=2), in a proposal to fix the bug #1474 (http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1474). So, if we find a better way of letting the user know about all errors found by LyX, I can use the same method in fixing that bug.
