I retried, and still get this strange behaviour.

On 'closer' examination I get:

        lilie:/home/poenitz # traceroute cvs.lyx.org
traceroute to cvs.lyx.org (80.232.38.163), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
        [...]
send failed: No buffer space available
send failed: No buffer space available
send failed: No buffer space available
        [...]
        13 baywatch (80.232.38.163) 2807.412 ms 2816.749 ms *
        [...]
send failed: No buffer space available
send failed: No buffer space available

The modem's LEDs 'CS' and 'TR' (I think so, it's switched off right
now...) are wildly blinking at that time.

Now, if only one out of ten packets makes it through to baywatch,
this certainly explains why the connection is 'slow'.

The 'send failed' seem to indicate some problem on my end, though.
I wonder what this could be. 'Normal' email/web/ssh access to other
sites works just fine.

Anybody an idea?

[This is in the public interest as otherwise we'd get nice
one-MB-patches once per week ... ;-)]
