Or there could be an entry named 'auto' which invokes the
auto-discovery code at template instantiation time. Hmm, I am not sure
this would work, after all...

Yes, I described something like that some time ago. This would make
external inset much easier to use and allow to merge with
insetgraphics without loss of usability, I think.
