If you have certain versions of pspell or aspell installed, then lyx
will detect the library version and use that instead of running the
program. Check config.log to  see if it was found.

1.4.0cvs corrects the UI error in the dialog - it is listed as "aspell
(library)" if it is found and chosen.

I'm not surprised, the spellchecker situation is a nightmare, I can't
even remember many of the details myself.

But the basic idea is that we prefer to use a library version if it is
available.
