http://bugzilla.lyx.org/ is definitely the place to be looking. There
are some really easy bugs (http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1318)
some medium (http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1352)
and some real stinkers (http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1340).

They would be encouraged to contact the list first on choosing a feature
request or bug to look at.

It would also be useful if they were given general information on how to
interact with free software communities (e.g.
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-Release-Practice-HOWTO/patching.html)
