  Thas was not my work. I should tell you that I was also surprised with
this behaviour. :-)

  If you notice the lyx2lyx help you will see that it is possible to to
specify the output file. BTW lyx2lyx is a filter, why should it return the
name of the output file?

  When was the last time that you saw awk, sed, grep, ... returning the name
of the output file.

  BTW the proper syntax is:
  lyx2lyx -o outfile.lyx
