In many ways I agree, but I also think that several scripts would
benefit from knowledge of the various lyxdirs. Not least because we
could create a library of useful shell functions rather than copy
code into each and every script we distribute.
Returning to the original problem, perhaps your
$$converter{latex, dvi}
suggestion is the 'least worst' after all.
