Yes, you have...almost each time I have such complaints ;)

The stable release is 4.x (4.8 at the moment).
Release 5.x will come with gcc 3.2, but is not yet for production use.
So, the FreeBSD-stable users are stuck with the more conservative 4.x
release until sometime next year, when 5.x will be tagged 'stable'.
