Thanks for all the replies.

--with-included-boost didn't work -- tried it before writing to the list
the first time. I'd bet it's the automake: the manual on gnu.org (for AM
1.7.5) includes the conditional construction which doesn't work for me.  
I'll ask the sysop to install the new version.
