Yes, that is precisely my discomfort too... but I cannot pinpoint it.

I have also noticed that in FormCharacter/ControlCharacter there is a
clean separation between... (what?), which appears to be lacking in 
FormDocument. 

E.g., all those strings "Author-year", "BigSkip", "US legal", "latin1",
"``text''", which are identical in the xforms and Qt implementations
and should perhaps be moved out of the frontends.

Is this part of the same feeling?
