Hello LyX developers. Long time no see.

I haven't kept close tabs on the External Inset discussions. But I was
wondering whether it might be used to support external *text* files.

Sometimes I'm struggling incessantly over a paragraph (or two or three) of
simple text -- no formatting -- and prefer to use an external editor like vim
to get it just right.

Couldn't an External Inset be one way of including such material, while
re-rendering it regularly to update the text presented in the LyX editor?

Am I understanding properly the role of the inset, w/r/t other kinds of
files/data? Why not text too?

More broadly, is LyX capable of calling the appropriate editing program
(according to MIME conventions) by clicking on the inset presenting the
external material?
