Maybe you are right, lyx would start to be more 'abused'. But I think that it may start to be abused by people that cannot understand why it's not wise to do manual formatting (and cannot understand it even if there is a message saying so in the minibuffer!), and _that_ people cannot stand lyx anyway. I don't believe that someone learns to _not_ do manual formatting simply because it's forbidden: they switch to another program IMO. Alfredo
