I added three debug printouts as you suggested at the locations in getSymbolFont, they say what statement they're after and print font.rawName(). Now I get the logfile attached. The first debug statement I added is right after the creation and init of font. With the fonts that aren't found for whatever reason (although they show up in fc-list _and_ in qtconfig), Luxi Sans is specified as the font at this stage already. Now what?
