This definitely won't change if fixed width is allowed. I just can't prove
it right now as I haven't found the time so far to fix MathParInset to do
proper alignment.

I also fail to see how \multicol can influence the result significantly.

Face it: Full redraw _is_ faster. This might have changed over time,
though, but it is the current state.
