Removing the code and inserting a displayed equation gives a weird line
breaking in lyx. But I don't think we care.

Sure, but the user doesn't care: he just places something in the wrong
place and it breaks. We already have a bug on disallowing this where
latex can't handle it, and the displayed equation thing is really no
different to that from a UI point of view
