I cannot fix all these getchar problems on my own, I'll need some help
there. What my patch shows (current CVS), is that making this work is
not hard but might be a bit tedious. I might have changed one "<=" too
many to "<", so I'll need some help finding those problems. (and by
changing them back you might trigger the assert again).

So, please help hunt for these problems, not just report them.
