I guess the whole problem is that *any* replacement for CVS is doomed to be
bound with same basic issues. I don't think that there's a need for another
version control system. There's a need for a software configuration
management tool -- an entirely different beast. CVS is good what it's good
for, it's just that if you're managing real-life projects, you do much more
than just version control.

If the consensus is that nobody needs anything more than version control, then
CVS is fine. No need to switch. If the consensus is that an SCM tool is
what's really needed, then Aegis is a very mature tool that has excellent
track record, it's GPL, and it rocks. It needs an attitude switch, but so
does move from a non-VCS environment to one with any VCS. Aegis is about 10
years "old" right now, it's used to manage large development projects (not
only in software).

I'm not pushing for anything -- as I said, I'm using it myself and I'd be
happy to aid in the deployment. It makes me a happier developer and that's
all that counts (yes, I'm selfish here). If a VCS is all that LyX developers
think they need, I guess there's no arguing with that.
