OK. Copy some text from your document and try and paste it in the minibuffer. Does it look good ? If not, then you have a mis-match between the encoding used for your document, and the encoding you've set via $LANG. Here's an example, for Russian (since I have a Russian LyX document with the right encoding). First I did : LANG=ru_RU ./lyx lyxdoc/ru_FAQ.lyx And indeed, the stuff was screwed up in spellchecker, and pasting document text in the minibuffer. The reason for this was that the document was in koi8-r, and the default ru_RU encoding for the GUI was different. Changing it to : LANG=ru_RU.KOI8-R ./lyx lyxdoc/ru_FAQ.lyx and everything is fine. I suspect this is your problem, somewhere you have a mis-match. If you can't get it to work, provide me with a minimal document and tell me exactly what you do. I note that the Czech LyX documents are in inputencoding default for some reason. john
