No, that starts \textrm. No underscore in \textrm. Type \mathrm if you want \mathrm or bind it to some key (C-m, unfortunately won't be possible). For me \textrm is "natural" as it allows typing German umlauts. I think we'll see some "chemed" in 1.4 if I find the time, which is basically some math inset with some different font handling.
