Alternatively, be more flexible and change the RE used in po/Makefile.in.in.
$(srcdir)/default_ui_l10n.pot: $(top_srcdir)/lib/ui/default.ui

Ditto for the /Item/ match.
(The [] expression contains a single 'space' and a single 'tab' character.)
Michael, perhaps you'll test and confirm that this does the trick?
