I recommend to wait until Lars has released 1.3.0pre3. Lars promised to apply a patch of mine that changes about 150 strings. (I hope that at least a few of them will merge with already existing strings.)

PS: When I 'make es.pox' inside the po dir, I get an es.pox with a lot of obsolete entries. Does it mean that my gettext is broken or should be upgraded? In the meantime, it's safe to edit es.po directly, right?I am not a gettext expert but I edit de.po directly without a problem (unless Lars remerges the po files before committing the update)
