I bet that on typical bodies of code, your C compiler actually
produces more efficient code overall than you could by hand assembly!
I'm not talking about dirty tricks, just about good sense. Like moving
things outside a loop if they are constant for the loop variable
(That's precisely what using column/row attributes as defaults is, in
fact!).
