I had played around with automatic  "paragraph inset" <-> "line inset" <->
character inset conversion, i.e only the paragraph with the cursor is
broken into individual chars, otherwise there is a per-line overhead of
about 20 bytes and additonal 40 bytes or so per paragraph. It seems like
a feasible approach. If this could be made transparent at a very low level
such that a caller of "insertChar()" does not need to know about it, this
would be a path worth of exploring...
