Indeed, at the moment it bails out if the return type is not 0.

So how can we differentiate between 
        "BibTeX has worked well enough to parse the database"
and
        "The database is totally screwed"
?

Presumably the returned value is different in these two cases. Could 
you investigate and tell me?
