Did I scare you know?

This one is not controversion (I hope), it only (almost) makes the
usage of "c" vs. 'c' consistent.

If possible a single char is used instead of a one char string.
added benefits is smaller memory footprint and faster code. (slightly)

Unless I get any objections, I will apply this.
(And unless you have already understood this, I am beginning to go
into prelease mode so I finish some business before that.)
