Hi!

The FAQ says I should report possible bugs here, so I do. I will subscribe
to this list later but not this week, so if you have any answers, it would
be very kind of you to copy me in.

First, I want to say that I like lyx a lot. It returned me to being
creative producing content for about 95% of my typing time, instead
of being creative coping with the WORD processor. You may understand.

There have been minor problems before, that gradually dissolved during
the updates. Until 1.2.1 - I can't use it as it came with SuSE 8.1 nor
Mandrake 9.0, and I just checked this is the newest version, so here's
my little report.

The major problems seem to be centered around ERTs:

a.) I did like the old display of ERTs much better. I like to use the
latex commands inline because for me, looking up a latex command is much
faster than trying the same for lyx (so far), and I made a stationery
using these. With the new display, editing these is more time consuming,
and when occasionally, I have produced something like:

ERTSTARTlatexcommand{latexparametertextERTEND lyxtext ERTSTARTmorelatex}ERTEND

older lyx versions would just work through that ok, but the new one seems
to be unable to get the two parts of ERT together into one latex command.

It is also inconvenient to open up each ERT one by one, or to cut/paste
from one to another when you want to concat some of them that have been
split after going from 1.1.6 to 1.2.1. The thing that I's love most with
this regard, is an option to get the old way of displaying ERTs, and a
more tolerant way of interpreting them - just as the old version did.

I'm attaching a two small test file, I hope they show the problem at
about the right place (at least, the protected spaces are not a problem,
I learned about this issue in the faq, the file works with 1.1.6). Yes,
I know it is probably extremely ugly lyx code and ugly latex code as well,
and I hate fixed line breaks and so on as well, but that does the job
for me and I did not have *any* time for that yet.

Stupid me edited the file in 1.2.1 to replace private content by
test text, saved as test.1.2.1.lyx, then copied the original file
over to test.1.1.6.lyx, did almost the same thing again with a plain
text editor in order not to save it as version 220 file. Sorry, doing
all of this in a hurry, can't reinstall the suse 1.1.6 rpm onto the
mandrake because of dependencies and rpm won't work --nodeps (?!)...,
so can't recheck the 1.1.6 behaviour myself now.

b.) When a document has been saved with 1.2 and I try to reopen it with
1.1.6, that version complains about new tags, but does not tell me which
tags these are, so that I could get back manually to an old version
compatible file. Is there any place where one can look um new tags
introduced from version to version?

c.) the old version had many little issues especially with tables.
I will look them up in the new version, and I'd be unhappy if they
would have been fixed... because that would be a reason for me to
clean up my letterhead and other files for use with lyx 1.2.x or
vice versa...

d.) a very good thing is, that whenever lyx crashed (quite rarely,
and in a reproducible pattern with some issues), it reliably wrote
an emergency file. I think I lost any work maybe only once, when
I mixed up an older emergency with a newer regular file or so, but
overall, this reliable mechanism is absolutely great. No fear anymore,
no pulse rate rising at all anymore, no matter what happens. :-)

Now, that's it for now. I want to conclude again that I like lyx a lot
so far, though already sometimes preferred to work in latex directly
already for special things, lyx has kept me from looking at it more
intensely at least until now. Because it's rather convenient... You
can look at several relatively large lyx generated pdf docs on my
www site, if you like.

Thank you so far for your fine work + good luck!

Best wishes,

Joerg

Dear LyX developers,
\layout Standard

sadly, this text cannot be processed in LyX w/o errors.
Sorry, I have started to process it in 1.2.1 when editing it for sending
it out, so you can't re-check in 1.1.6 (my stupidity, sorry), I can also
supply it in 1.1.6 later if that should be required, but not this week.
\layout Standard

Hope at least it is not totally a user's problem.

Best regards,
