Hello Adam, LyX has separated the kernel from the GUI so, in principle you can have any frontend you like. In practice, the xforms interface is complete and a Qt interface is almost complete. When it's finished, we'll release LyX 1.3. Not at the moment. There has been quite a lot of talk about changing the LyX format to XML and using external converters for all other formats including LaTeX. You only need latex to create the printable document. You could use LyX quite happily on a machine with no latex at all and then post the document to a more powerful machine for printing...
