Hello Adam,

LyX has separated the kernel from the GUI so, in principle you can have any 
frontend you like. In practice, the xforms interface is complete and a Qt 
interface is almost complete. When it's finished, we'll release LyX 1.3.

There have been some tentative starts on a gnome interface, but it seems 
dead in the water at the moment.

Not at the moment. There has been quite a lot of talk about changing the LyX 
format to XML and using external converters for all other formats including 
LaTeX. At the moment though, that's just a pipe dream.

You only need latex to create the printable document. You could use LyX quite 
happily on a machine with no latex at all and then post the document to a 
more powerful machine for printing...
