I figured it was something like that.. 

About documenting it, perhaps it could go to where the list 
environment is described?

Would it somehow be possible for LyX to recognize this case (i.e. a ']' in 
the label) and produce a warning if it isn't within '{}'? That'd at least 
give the user a clue about how to work around it.
