Hm. In case there is no selection I can 

 (a) split the \mathbf inset at cursor position
     [I could even merge them again if nothing is entered]
 (b) insert a \mathnormal inset.
 (c) simply not apply that patch (which I don't like anyway)

This workaround isn't for nested insets anyway. This is just to sooth
people complaining about the "unusual" behaviour of pressing "C-b" twice.
