validate is broken for AMS detection and can't be fixed for hard technical
reasons. We had that discussion for several hours.
The only patch _I_ will accept for 1.3 is either
(a) a bi-state switch "AMS on/off" and a default of "on"
(b) a tri-state switch "AMS always/never/guess" and a default
of either "always" or "guess"
Only in case (b) your patch is part of a solution.
