That'd certainly be a massive improvement on the current ugliness, but
it still has the problems of C++ output, like inflexibity and
awkwardness (not to mention lots of extra code).
The major problem with xslt is that we'd all have to learn it. But
technically, I would consider it a superior solution in terms of the
"right thing to do".
