It's about supporting AMS's flAlign which I've never heard of before but which is supposed to be the replacement of the day for AMS's xalignat and xxalignat. Not too important IMO (as I obviously never have used it myself), but nothing that will break anything, and one more item on the "look, we do AMS"-list.
