No of course not. That's why I suggest an automagic solution in 
lib/configure. However, one user may prefer speed over disk footprint whilst 
another might be more worried about his nearly full hard disk. (And if 
Norbert is generating 3000+ PPM images then his disk usage is going to be 10s 
if not 100s of MBytes!). Moreover, the gs I have installed on one machine 
here does not even have a png driver!

So an auto-generated lyxrc.defaults that can be overwritten by a user's 
preferences file is the right solution IMO.
