If you are not talking about the WYSIWYM implementation, I definitely
don't understand why leaving the "Horizontal Alignement" section of the
"Column Dialog" alive when the columnn width is fixed will induce any
psychic trouble ;-) . Or my be am I still missing something ?

Not exactly. The redefinition (setting \tabularnewline to \\) is just for
latex2html and Co, as they don't use the array package where
tabularnewline is defined, and is harmless. What I was suggesting is to
use systematically \tabularnewline as the "end of row" marker, as it avoid
conflicts with functions redefining \\ (eg \centering and Co), but this
will implies either to use the array package or to import the relevant
part of this package to the preamble, though is requires either an
agreement on the array package or some (may-be-not-so-immediate) work.
