Not that bad, if you need a word count (they won't take
more than 1500 words...) then you probably find spell
checking useful as well.

Getting rid of the popup would be nice though.
Short-lived popups are very bad GUI design because
they have to be dismissed in some way.
Small amounts of information (like a word count)
can be displayed in the minibuffer instead.  No
need to dismiss it - it disappears whenever
the minibuffer is re-used for something else.
