I'll take your word for it :)  

It wouldn't have done me much good in that situation, though.  I know
about diff and patch, I'd have been gambling that I'd find something
later if I'd tried anything on a non-text format.

I'd really urge sticking to a pure text format; it's one of lyx's
greatest strengths.
