I hope useability will be considered too.  (What, I have to
define a style before I can use bold?)  Of course this one
is easily solved by distributing lyx with common styles
predefined.

I also hope I can continue doing things like:

1. Mark the first 2/3 of a sentence, turn on italic somehow.
2. Mark the last 2/3 of the sentence, turn on bold.

The first 1/3 is now italic, the middle 1/3 is now bold italic,
the last 1/3 bold only.

A somewhat contrived example, but I do occationally use bold
to emphasize further in the middle of something italicised.
And no, using normal in the middle of italic text does not
work for me at all.  Such a word almost disappear for me, rather 
than stand out.

In short, it is nice to be able to add orthogonal font properties
automatically.
