Wasn't John talking about separate "edit" and "display" command buffers. Ie, all commands are displayed in the "display" buffer" that I see at the bottom of your screenshot. Hitting M-x would make the "edit" buffer visible immediately above the "display" buffer and would place your cursor in it. Return would hide this "edit" buffer again and execute the command. Ie, identical functionality to your suggestion but without the need for a window. John, have I got the right end of your stick? > But as I said I was just wondering what others are thinking...
