I had to admit, that I'm surprised of the existance of paste.
I've learned a new unix command today!

But I don't understand the problem of portability of sort.
Maybe, it's a environment thing? What about

% LC_COLLATE=C sort POTFILES.in

Possibly an additional parameter -f for sort is also usable.

This should be portable.
