Well, maybe not for 1.2.1, but this is useful for generic scripts, e.g.
lyxconvert blah.lyx blah.tex
...
lyx -i $ext $1 -e $ext2 $2
lyxconvert blah.tex blah.lyx
etc.
(in fact I would rather like "tex" to become a recognised format too)
certainly the current behaviour is nuts, and I did run into this by
accident
