The script lib/configure looks for pfb files accessible to latex and
creates from that a fonts.dir file suitable for X. That's all for now.
I am not sure what more we can do, since it is very
distribution-specific. There is not code now to set the fontpath, for
example.

I think the debian maintainer (is that Jules?) said it is better
handled at packaging level. I think this is right, actually. I'll try
to get in touch with mandrake people about this. However, if you have
a brilliant idea, please share it with us.
