I wonder why. Perhaps it is simply the amount of time and bugfixes
invested in relyx-perl. Now that it's clear there are no candidates for
maintaining it, it makes a lot more sense to start afresh.

Excellent ! Having the unmaintained relyx has been a PITA for some time
