This smells like the bad Imagemagick convert problem to me. In your preferences, try the following for the EPS->XPM converter: convert EPS:$$i PPM:$$i.ppm ; ppmtoxpm $$i.ppm > $$o It uses Imagemagick convert to go from EPS to PPM, then the netpbm tools to go from PPM to XPM.
