Further info: I tried to drag the left edge of the LyX window when it happened. While it was 'frozen' trying to render. The latter is a requirement. I suspect it happens due to the slowness of my 56k ssh connection.
I have been able to reproduce the crash a couple of times, but cannot do it reliably. Not good. Martin
