I think Herbert has a point here. Get it working, since it is needed _now_. There is time to clean it up later (Yes, Lars, I know that you don't like temporry solutions because you are afraid they may become permanent). I would not call 'file' since this might be not available on some systems and we don't need Just Another Dependency. A extra file under lib/ might be in order, though. But if this causes too much effort for the people doing it and may lead to a situation where nobody fixes it, it does not help at all.
