What is the reason for this 'let LyX handle deadkeys' thing anyway?
When is it used? Who uses it?
For me it looks like just another source of problems why input can go
wrong.

The proper solution would be a proper text inset nested within some math
inset. This is impossible right now and would need a major rewrite of
either the math cursor or the locking inset stuff.
Changing the bind files is certainly better than what we used to have
(like \def\oe{\"o} in the preamble and equally awful things)

There is no 'old' solution anymore. There are basically two ways to do it
'the old way': Either you find someone who understands old mathed or
simply revert to old mathed.
