A proper mbox inset is currently impossible to implement. It would mean
either (a) re-implementing the main text inset as math inset or (b) make
all math insets proper lyx insets. The first is not feasible simply for the
amount of features of LyXText, the second for incompatiblity between math
cursors and lyx cursor. I can imagine some solution, but that's not for
1.2.0.

For stuff like the 'explanatory strings' we could use some cut down mbox
inset that does not handle font changes etc. Such a thing is already
implemented and sort of working:  type  's \lyxbox{ ist größer als } t',
mark it, press C-m to see what I mean.
