This is 'usability-wise' not very different from the virtual function
method, is it?

I think there generally there is no perfect method, so given a selection of
more or less equivalent items I'd pick the one which suits best to the rest
of the project. And we have virtual functions already, but no RTTI and no
traits of our own that I am aware of...

The current locking scheme has made it to the top of my personal list of
'10 reasons why LyX source suck'. --- Yes. That's the position in front of
the paragraph list stuff...
